Introduction

What is an Operating System?

An operating system (OS) is the software that manages and controls the hardware and other software on a computer. It provides a platform for programs to run on and performs tasks such as:

  • managing memory,
  • coordinating input and output (I/O) operations,
  • controlling the operation of the computer’s hardware.

The operating system is the most important piece of software on a computer and is responsible for managing the computer’s resources and making them available to other programs. It is the foundation upon which other software and applications are built and is essential for the proper functioning of a computer.

How to install the OS?

Installing any operating system (OS) on a computer is a process that typically involves the following steps:

  1. Obtain an installation media for the operating system you want to install. This can be a DVD, USB flash drive, or an ISO file that you can burn to a DVD or USB drive.

  2. Make sure your computer is turned off and then insert the installation media into the appropriate drive on your computer.

Several OSs on the same computer

Yes, it is possible to have multiple operating systems installed on a single computer. This is known as dual-booting or multi-booting.

To dual-boot multiple operating systems on a single computer, you will need to partition the hard drive and install each operating system on a separate partition. During the boot process, you will be presented with a menu that allows you to choose which operating system you want to boot into.

To select an operating system restart your computer and wait for the boot menu to appear. The boot menu is usually displayed after the computer’s BIOS or UEFI has completed its initial checks and is ready to boot the operating system.
